Magnetic Fishing Rod Vest Clip

The Problem

When fly fishing, constantly setting the rod down between casts is inconvenient and risks damage. Commercial magnetic rod tethers exist for landing nets, but nothing designed specifically for rod retention on a vest. This project is a custom two-part magnetic quick-release system — one housing attaches to the vest, the other clamps to the rod blank, and dual N52 neodymium magnets hold them together until a deliberate pull releases the rod.

Both parts were modeled from scratch in SolidWorks, with material and magnet selection driven by the outdoor use environment — corrosion resistance and UV stability were primary constraints.

Two-Part System

The vest-side housing features a D-ring loop at the top for attachment to vest webbing or a D-ring, with a ribbed internal gusset structure that transfers pull loads efficiently rather than relying on wall thickness alone. The magnet pocket sits at the base, recessed and oriented to align precisely with the rod-side magnet.

The rod-side clamp uses four curved spring fingers that flex outward to snap around the rod blank, then return inward to grip it. This allows tool-free installation and removal while maintaining a secure hold under fishing conditions. The same magnet pocket geometry mirrors the vest side for consistent engagement. Rod blank dimensions are being measured to finalize the finger geometry for a tight, rattle-free fit.

Both parts are printed in ASA filament for UV and weather resistance. Dual epoxy-coated N52 neodymium disc magnets are spaced apart in each housing to resist rotation and provide a predictable, consistent release direction.

Design Decisions

Material
  • ASA filament (both parts)
  • UV and weather resistant
  • Higher heat resistance than PLA/PETG
Magnets
  • Dual N52 neodymium disc magnets
  • Epoxy-coated for corrosion resistance
  • Spaced to resist rotation
Retention
  • 4 curved spring fingers on rod side
  • Tool-free snap installation
  • Sized to rod blank diameter
Current Status — In Progress
Vest-side housing CAD is complete. Rod-side clamp design is complete pending final rod blank diameter measurement to confirm spring finger geometry. Magnets sourced. Next steps: finalize rod-side dimensions, print both parts, and test magnetic engagement force and retention under load.
